Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has explained why Maduka Okoye was yet to join Nigeria’s camp ahead of Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar.
The Udinese goalkeeper was included in Nigeria’s squad alongside Stanley Nwabali and Arthur Okonkwo but did not report when the team began preparations in Uyo.
His late arrival attracted attention, especially after Okoye was spotted in Milan during the week.
Chelle, however, said the goalkeeper’s absence was linked to his club.
According to the Super Eagles coach, Udinese asked for permission for Okoye to remain in Italy to attend to some club related activities, and he agreed to the request.
“The goalkeeper is not here. His club asked me to allow him do some club related activities and I agreed,” Chelle explained.
The coach added that he would manage the situation and make the necessary decisions ahead of the qualifier.
Okoye eventually arrived in camp before Nigeria’s final training session on Thursday, meaning Chelle had all three goalkeeping options available for the Madagascar match.
The 26 year old has returned to the Super Eagles setup after missing some previous international assignments and is competing with Nwabali and Okonkwo for the starting position.
Nigeria will open their Group L campaign against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The Super Eagles will then travel to Guinea Bissau for their second qualifying fixture on September 29.
With Okoye now back with the squad, Chelle can focus on selecting his preferred goalkeeper for the opening match as Nigeria begin their journey towards the 2027 AFCON.
