Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has praised goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for his crucial contribution in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Madagascar in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Nigeria came from behind to secure all three points in Uyo after goals from debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor cancelled out Madagascar’s early opener.

One of the key moments of the match arrived shortly after the break when Nwabali produced an excellent one-on-one save to prevent Madagascar from doubling their lead. The stop proved vital as Nigeria later completed the comeback.

Speaking after the game, Chelle singled out the Chippa United goalkeeper for praise.

“He was very good,” the Super Eagles coach said while reflecting on the save that kept Nigeria in the contest. Chelle described the intervention as an important moment in the match.

Nwabali’s performance was particularly significant because it came after months of intense competition for Nigeria’s number one shirt. The goalkeeper recently returned to the national team setup and has been battling with Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo for a starting place.

The victory gave Nigeria a winning start to their AFCON qualifying campaign and offered encouragement for Chelle, who handed opportunities to several new faces in the squad. George Ilenikhena scored on his debut, while Moses Usor netted the winning goal after coming off the bench.

With Guinea-Bissau next on the schedule, Nwabali’s display has strengthened his case to remain between the posts as the Super Eagles continue their quest for qualification.
