Rangers have opened discussions with Brentford over a deal to bring Jayden Meghoma back to Ibrox following the defender’s impressive spell in Scotland last season. Reports from the United Kingdom indicate that negotiations are underway as the Scottish giants look to strengthen their options at left-back ahead of a demanding campaign.
The 20-year-old spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Rangers, where he established himself as a key member of the squad. Meghoma made 44 appearances across all competitions and contributed seven goal involvements, earning praise for his consistency, athleticism and maturity despite his young age.
His performances left a strong impression on the club, and Rangers are now exploring the possibility of bringing him back for another stint in Glasgow.
Rangers looking for left-back reinforcement
Rangers’ interest is driven partly by a lack of depth in the left-back position.
Tuur Rommens is currently the only recognised senior left-back available to manager Derek McInnes, prompting the club to explore options before the transfer window closes. Meghoma’s familiarity with the squad and Scottish football makes him an attractive solution.
Unlike many new signings who require time to settle, Meghoma already understands the demands of playing for Rangers and the expectations that come with representing one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
That experience could prove valuable as Rangers compete domestically and in Europe this season.
From Tottenham to Brentford
Meghoma’s rise has been steady.
The left-back began his development at Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Southampton, where he progressed through the academy ranks and made his senior debut. Brentford recognised his potential and secured his signature in 2024 on a long-term deal.
After gaining experience on loan at Preston North End, he joined Rangers and enjoyed the most productive season of his young career.
His combination of pace, defensive awareness and attacking energy made him one of the club’s most dependable performers during the campaign.
Nigeria still an option
One aspect of Meghoma’s career that continues to attract attention in Nigeria is his international eligibility.
Born in England, the defender has represented England at several youth levels, featuring for the Under-15, Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 teams. However, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria through his family background.
In a previous interview, Meghoma admitted that Nigeria’s growth on the international stage has made him consider representing the Super Eagles in the future, although his current focus remains on England’s youth setup.
Those comments have ensured he remains firmly on the radar of Nigerian football followers, especially at a time when the Super Eagles are actively monitoring talented dual-national players across Europe.
Opportunity to follow a familiar path
Several Nigerian internationals have used Rangers as a platform to launch successful careers.
Defenders such as Calvin Bassey developed into full Super Eagles internationals after shining at Ibrox, and Rangers supporters will hope Meghoma can continue his progress if a return deal is completed.
