The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly reached an agreement with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle on an improved contract, signaling renewed confidence in the Malian tactician despite Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Chelle, who was appointed as Nigeria’s head coach in January 2025 on an initial two-year deal, has overseen a period of transition for the three-time African champions. While the Super Eagles ultimately fell short in their bid to secure a place at the World Cup, the NFF appears satisfied with the progress made under his leadership.
According to reports, the revised agreement includes an increase in Chelle’s salary and a major change to the structure of his technical crew. Under the new arrangement, the NFF will assume responsibility for paying the salaries of the coach’s assistants, a move designed to strengthen the national team’s backroom setup ahead of future competitions.
National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko confirmed that discussions between both parties were successful, adding that new performance targets have also been incorporated into the updated contract.
The development comes after Chelle guided Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and helped stabilize the team following a turbulent period marked by coaching changes and inconsistent results. His work has convinced key decision-makers within Nigerian football that he remains the right man to lead the Super Eagles into the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign and beyond.
Retaining Chelle is also expected to provide continuity for a squad that still boasts several top European-based stars, including captain Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Osimhen, and Alex Iwobi. With the disappointment of missing the World Cup now behind them, attention is shifting toward rebuilding and competing strongly in future continental tournaments.
The NFF is expected to officially announce the details of Chelle’s new deal in the coming days as preparations continue for Nigeria’s next round of international fixtures.
