Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho could still remain at Celtic despite becoming a free agent, with former West Ham United forward Frank McAvennie expressing confidence that the Nigerian will eventually sign a new contract with the Scottish champions.
Iheanacho officially became a free agent at the end of June after Celtic allowed the one-year extension clause in his contract to expire. The development sparked speculation over the 29-year-old’s next destination, but a return to Parkhead remains a real possibility.
The former Leicester City and Manchester City striker enjoyed a productive debut campaign with Celtic despite battling injury setbacks. He scored nine goals in 24 appearances across all competitions, playing a key role as the Hoops completed a domestic double by winning the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.
McAvennie, who played for both West Ham United and Celtic, believes the Nigerian has already done enough to earn a fresh deal.
“Iheanacho has signed. He’s done enough. He’ll stay,” the former Scotland international said while backing the Super Eagles forward to continue his career at Celtic.
The experienced pundit also praised Iheanacho’s impact during the closing stages of last season, when the Nigerian rediscovered his best form by scoring six goals in his final nine matches. His contributions included crucial late winners and an injury-time penalty against Motherwell that helped Celtic secure valuable points in their title-winning campaign.
Although no official announcement has been made, reports suggest Celtic manager Martin O’Neill remains keen to keep Iheanacho at the club and discussions over a new contract are ongoing.
For Iheanacho, staying in Glasgow would provide continuity after an impressive resurgence and could also boost his chances of remaining in Eric Chelle’s plans for the Super Eagles ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures.
With negotiations continuing behind the scenes, Celtic supporters will be hoping the club can reach an agreement with the Nigerian striker, whose goals and experience proved invaluable during the second half of last season.
