Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent transfer from Brentford to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City, bringing an end to his loan spell with the Sky Blues.
Coventry confirmed the deal after activating the obligation to buy clause included in Onyeka’s loan agreement, which became effective following the club’s promotion to the Premier League. While the transfer fee has not been disclosed, the Nigerian international has signed a long term contract as he prepares for the 2026/27 season at the CBS Arena.
The 28-year-old joined Coventry during the January transfer window and quickly established himself as a key figure under manager Frank Lampard. His energy, defensive awareness and experience played an important role as the club secured the Championship title and earned a return to the English top flight for the first time in 25 years.
Onyeka made 14 league appearances during his loan spell, scoring once while helping Coventry finish the campaign strongly. His consistent performances convinced the club to make his stay permanent ahead of their Premier League return.
Reacting to the move, Onyeka expressed his delight at remaining with Coventry and said he is looking forward to helping the club compete in the Premier League.
The transfer also brings an end to his five year association with Brentford, where he made more than 70 appearances after joining from Danish side Midtjylland in 2021. During his time with the Bees, he gained valuable Premier League experience and also spent time on loan at German club Augsburg before his successful spell at Coventry.
Onyeka remains an important member of Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad. His permanent move to a Premier League club is expected to further strengthen his chances of maintaining a regular place in the national team as preparations continue for upcoming international competitions.
Coventry will now hope Onyeka’s experience and leadership can help the club establish themselves back among England’s elite after ending their lengthy absence from the Premier League.
