Ademola Lookman is now Nigeria’s joint second-highest scorer in Champions League history.  His goal against Manchester United on Tuesday night took his tally to nine, the same as former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins.

Only Victor Osimhen, with 16, has scored more in the competition among Nigerian players.

Last night, Atletico Madrid beat United 2-0 at the Metropolitano. Lookman came off the bench in the 71st minute, replacing Julian Alvarez. Eight minutes later, he scored.

Jonathan David’s effort was saved by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, and Lookman reacted quickest to the rebound. He tucked it away for Atletico’s second.

It was his first Champions League goal of the season. It was also the club’s first win in this season’s league phase, after an opening 2-1 loss to Liverpool.

The strike was Lookman’s first Champions League goal against United. His only other goal against the club came for Fulham in the Premier League in 2021.

Atletico visit Espanyol in La Liga at the weekend. After that, they face Stuttgart in the Champions League.

Lookman will be eager to increase his tally after drawing level with Martins. Another goal would take him to 10 Champions League goals and move him into sole possession of second place on Nigeria’s all-time scoring list.
