Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has offered a fascinating insight into the different personalities within Nigeria’s national team, explaining how each player prepares mentally ahead of important matches.

Speaking during a conversation with Algerian influencer Just Riadh, the Franco-Malian tactician said there is no single approach to preparing for games, as every player has developed a routine that helps them perform at their best.

According to Chelle, some members of the Super Eagles begin switching into match mode several days before kick-off. Players who are usually lively and playful early in the week gradually become quiet, shutting out distractions as they focus on the upcoming fixture.

“You have some on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; they are kidding. Starting on Wednesday, not a sign, not a word. These guys, they are in their own thing. They need three days.”

In contrast, the 47-year-old singled out Alex Iwobi as one of the squad’s most cheerful personalities. The Fulham midfielder is known for creating content for his popular vlogs and maintaining a positive atmosphere around the team, even on matchdays.

Despite his relaxed and humorous personality, Chelle suggested that Iwobi never loses sight of his responsibilities, balancing his upbeat nature with professionalism.

“Then you have some players. You have Alex Iwobi. That guy is good; he is always smiling as he makes his vlogs. Great guy. Before a match, you see him in the locker room, the guy’s there laughing.“

While Iwobi embraces a lively and outgoing approach before games, Calvin Bassey takes a completely different path in his final preparations.

Chelle disclosed that the Fulham defender prefers solitude before kick-off. Rather than engaging with teammates, Bassey finds a quiet corner in the dressing room, puts on his headphones, closes his eyes, and meditates to sharpen his concentration before stepping onto the pitch.

The Super Eagles boss believes these contrasting routines highlight the diverse personalities within the squad, stressing that there is no universal formula for success as long as each player is mentally ready when the whistle blows.

“Then there is Calvin Bassey. He’s a bit like Alex, except that in the locker room, he goes into a corner and meditates. He closes his eyes, puts on the headphones. He concentrates, and you have others who need three days,” Chelle added.
