Iheanacho’s influence was particularly evident during Celtic’s Scottish Cup triumph. The former Super Eagles forward delivered when it mattered most, scoring twice in the semi-final clash against St Mirren before coming off the bench to add Celtic’s third goal in the 3-1 victory over Dunfermline Athletic in the final.
His contributions were not limited to domestic competitions. Iheanacho also played a key role in Europe, making seven appearances in the UEFA Europa League. The Nigerian striker found the back of the net once and received praise for his intelligent hold-up play, movement, and ability to bring teammates into attacking situations. He also chipped in with an assist in the Scottish League Cup.
Those performances have only strengthened the argument for Celtic to retain the experienced forward beyond this summer. Speaking about the club’s need for attacking reinforcements, Mulgrew insisted that Iheanacho should remain part of the squad.
“I mean there’s no doubt about it, for a few seasons now there’s been a striker needed. Daizen Maeda stepped up at the end of the season, but we need a striker.
“Celtic need to bring a striker in, two, maybe three. Because in the actual squad, I don’t know if Kelechi Iheanacho has triggered his contract or his extension yet. That’ll be something I would be looking to keep and then bring another couple.”
With the striker’s current deal nearing its expiration date, Celtic must now make a decision on his long-term future. The Scottish champions have the option of extending his stay, while discussions over a fresh contract are also believed to be on the table.
As preparations continue for the 2026-27 season, Iheanacho’s situation remains one to watch.
However, if Mulgrew’s recommendation carries any weight, the Nigerian could still have an important role to play at Parkhead as Celtic look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of another title challenge.
