Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a major setback ahead of their final Group C fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after CAF suspended two key players for the decisive encounter against Egypt.
Defender Oluwatosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini will both miss the crucial match following disciplinary incidents during Nigeria’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia. The suspensions leave head coach Justine Madugu with important decisions to make as the Falcons fight for a place in the knockout stages.
The Super Falcons revived their campaign with a determined win over the Copper Queens after suffering a shock defeat to Malawi in their opening match. However, the victory came at a significant cost.
Demehin pays the price for red card
Demehin’s suspension comes as no surprise after the centre-back was sent off during the first half of the clash against Zambia.
The defender initially received a yellow card for a challenge on Zambia captain Barbra Banda. Following a VAR review, the referee upgraded the punishment to a straight red card after judging Demehin to be the last defender.
Her dismissal forced Nigeria to play a large portion of the match with ten players, but the Falcons showed tremendous resilience to protect their slender lead.
Demehin has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in recent years and her absence will be a significant concern for the coaching crew. The Galatasaray defender has become a key figure in the Super Falcons backline and is regarded as one of the team’s most dependable defenders.
Echegini also ruled out
In addition to Demehin’s suspension, Jennifer Echegini will also be unavailable for the Egypt encounter after accumulating disciplinary sanctions.
The midfielder has become an increasingly important member of the national team setup, providing energy and creativity in the middle of the park.
Losing both players at the same time presents a fresh challenge for Madugu, particularly in a match that could determine Nigeria’s fate in the competition.
Huge test for the Super Falcons
Nigeria’s campaign has already been filled with drama.
After beginning the tournament with an unexpected defeat to Malawi, the Falcons responded impressively against Zambia despite playing with ten women for much of the contest.
Asisat Oshoala’s early goal proved enough to secure all three points and keep Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive. The result moved the Falcons back into contention heading into the final round of group fixtures.
Now they must complete the job against Egypt without two experienced members of the squad.
