Taiwo Awoniyi has called on Coventry City to be more clinical in front of goal after the Sky Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat to Hull City in what was their first home Premier League match in twenty-five years.
The Nigeria international started the encounter at the Coventry Building Society Arena and was among the hosts’ brightest attacking threats, however his early promise was not enough to prevent a second successive league defeat for Frank Lampard’s side.

Awoniyi was candid in admitting that the shot-stopping of the Hull goalkeeper made the difference on the day, pointing out that the chances Coventry created were largely snuffed out by fine goalkeeping rather than a lack of quality in the buildup.
Furthermore, he stressed that the team needed to be more incisive in the final third going forward, noting that possession alone would not be enough to turn performances into results. As a result, the Nigerian forward’s post-match comments carried a tone of frustration rather than despair, given that Coventry had shown enough in the final third to suggest better days are ahead.
The defeat leaves Coventry without a win from their opening two Premier League matches, while Hull City, who had been tipped for relegation before the season began, have now claimed maximum points from their first two outings.
