Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali marked his first outing since returning to Chippa United with a clean sheet, starting between the posts as the Chilli Boys edged Ravens 1-0 in a preseason friendly. The result offered an early, if low-key, glimpse of the 30-year-old shot-stopper getting back up to speed after a lengthy spell without competitive football.
Nwabali’s inclusion in the starting lineup comes barely two weeks after he completed his second stint at the club, having rejoined Chippa United on July 12 following seven months without a contract.
As a result, his preseason minutes carry added significance, with the goalkeeper needing to shake off the rust that built up during his time as a free agent. The clean sheet against Ravens, while only a friendly, will nonetheless be viewed as a positive early marker as he works his way back into peak match sharpness ahead of the new South African Premiership season.
Nwabali’s exit from Chippa United in February had left him without a club for months, a stretch that saw him miss out on Super Eagles selection for high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal. Consequently, his primary objective now extends beyond merely reclaiming his place at club level; regular football is also viewed as central to reviving his standing with the national team setup under coach Eric Chelle.
Chippa United’s victory continues their preparations for a 2026/27 campaign in which they will be eager to build on a difficult previous season, having survived relegation with just four points to spare. The club has been vocal about the boost Nwabali’s experience and leadership are expected to provide, and his manager’s decision to hand him early preseason minutes suggests he is being fast-tracked back into the first-choice goalkeeping role.
Nwabali’s return to regular action is a welcome development. His absence from club football for the best part of a year had opened the door for Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo to compete for the number one jersey, and it remains to be seen how quickly he can force his way back into contention. However, given his pedigree, including his heroics at the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, a sustained run of clean sheets for Chippa United in the coming weeks would go a long way toward reinserting him into Chelle’s plans.
Chippa United are expected to continue their preseason schedule with further friendlies before the new Betway Premiership campaign gets underway. Nwabali, meanwhile, will be looking to build on this outing with more minutes under his belt, as both club and player work toward getting him fully match-fit and firmly back in the goalkeeping conversation for Nigeria.
