The Nigerian forward became a free agent earlier this summer following the expiration of his contract at Championship club West Bromwich Albion. After attracting interest from several clubs across England and Europe, Le Havre appear to have won the race for his signature.

The move would see Maja return to a league where he previously enjoyed some of the best football of his career.

Back to familiar territory

French football holds special memories for the Nigerian international.

Maja joined Bordeaux from Sunderland in January 2019 and quickly established himself as an important player for the club. During his time in France, he featured in both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, scoring important goals and earning a reputation as a reliable finisher.

His most productive campaign came during Bordeaux’s promotion push in Ligue 2, when he played a key role in attack and reminded many observers of the talent that had made him one of England’s most promising young forwards.

A return to France therefore represents more than just another transfer.

It is a chance to return to an environment where he has previously thrived and rebuild momentum after a frustrating period in England.

Difficult end at West Brom

Maja’s time at West Brom produced mixed fortunes.

After joining the Baggies in 2023, the Nigerian striker initially struggled with injuries and fitness issues that limited his impact. However, he eventually found form and became one of the club’s most effective attacking players.

The 2024/25 campaign was particularly encouraging as he emerged as a regular goalscoring threat and demonstrated the quality that had earned him a move to Europe years earlier.

Unfortunately, injuries again disrupted his progress during the following season.

Contract negotiations between player and club eventually failed to produce an agreement, leading to his departure as a free agent this summer.

That situation opened the door for interested clubs to pursue the striker without paying a transfer fee.

Why Le Havre want Maja

Le Havre are looking to strengthen their attacking options ahead of another demanding Ligue 1 campaign.

The club narrowly secured their top-flight status and have been active in the transfer market as they seek additional firepower. Bringing in a striker with Maja’s experience is viewed as a major boost.

At 27, the Nigerian arrives with valuable experience from England and France.

He has played in the Premier League, Championship, Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, giving him the kind of versatility and maturity that many clubs value.

Most importantly, he knows how to score goals.

Across his professional career, Maja has built a reputation as a striker capable of finding the net consistently when fully fit. His movement inside the penalty area and calm finishing remain among his strongest qualities.

What it means for the Super Eagles

The transfer could also be significant for Maja’s international ambitions.

The striker has found opportunities with the Super Eagles difficult to come by due to intense competition for places. Players such as Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Tolu Arokodare and Akor Adams have all strengthened Nigeria’s attacking options in recent years.

As a result, regular football at club level has become essential for any forward hoping to force his way into Eric Chelle’s plans.

A successful spell in Ligue 1 would certainly help Maja’s cause.
