Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche has opened up on the club’s decision to sign Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika, describing the Nigerian as a key addition to the Bundesliga side’s rebuilding plans.
The German club recently completed the signing of Onyedika from Belgian champions Club Brugge in a deal reportedly worth around €10 million, bringing an end to the midfielder’s successful spell in Belgium. The transfer followed months of speculation linking the Nigerian international with a move away from Club Brugge.
Onyedika arrives in Germany after establishing himself as one of the most consistent midfielders in Belgian football, helping Club Brugge win multiple trophies during his time at the club. He made 183 appearances for the Belgian giants and played a major role in their domestic success.
Why Frankfurt wanted Onyedika
Speaking after the midfielder’s unveiling, Krosche explained that Frankfurt’s recruitment team had been impressed by several aspects of Onyedika’s game.
According to the Frankfurt chief, the Nigerian combines physical strength, tactical intelligence and consistency at a high level, qualities the club believes are essential as they prepare for the new Bundesliga season.
Krosche also highlighted the midfielder’s winning mentality and experience despite still being only 25 years old.
The Frankfurt sporting director noted that Onyedika has been a regular starter for several seasons and has already collected major honours in Belgium, making him an ideal fit for a team looking to strengthen its core ahead of a new era.
Beating competition for his signature
Frankfurt were not the only club interested in the Nigerian.
Reports in recent weeks linked Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad with a move for the Super Eagles star, creating competition for his signature before the Bundesliga club eventually secured the deal.
The German side reportedly had an initial offer turned down before returning with an improved proposal that convinced Club Brugge to sanction the transfer.
For Frankfurt, the pursuit was worth the effort.
The club views Onyedika as a midfielder capable of bringing energy, defensive stability and leadership to the squad, attributes that have become increasingly valuable in modern football.
New challenge in Germany
The move represents the biggest step of Onyedika’s career so far.
After proving himself in Denmark and later Belgium, the former FC Ebedei and Midtjylland midfielder now gets the opportunity to test himself in one of Europe’s strongest leagues.
His arrival also continues Nigeria’s connection with Eintracht Frankfurt. Onyedika becomes the latest Nigerian to represent the club and will hope to follow in the footsteps of players such as Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, who enjoyed a memorable spell with the German side.
With a long-term contract expected to keep him at Frankfurt until 2031, the Super Eagles midfielder now has the platform to establish himself as one of the leading African players in the Bundesliga.
For Nigerian football fans, the transfer is another sign of Onyedika’s growing reputation in Europe. After years of steady progress, the 25-year-old has earned a move to one of Germany’s biggest clubs and will now be expected to play a central role in Frankfurt’s ambitions this season.
