Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick has been officially promoted to Brentford’s first team and has signed a new four-year contract with a club option of a further year, the Premier League side confirmed.
The 21-year-old centre-back has already linked up with head coach Keith Andrews’ squad during pre-season, with the club making clear he will no longer be available for loan.
Andrews Full of Praise
Head coach Andrews expressed his delight at securing Fredrick’s future, highlighting the Nigerian’s international pedigree as a key factor.
“We’re delighted that Benji has signed a new deal and is going to be part of the group this season, because we see a lot of potential in him and where we can bring his game to,” Andrews said. “He’s already played senior international football and was a big part of Nigeria’s team in their World Cup qualifying campaign.”
Andrews acknowledged the work ahead for the defender following his lengthy injury lay-off. “The first port of call for Benji is to integrate into the squad consistently. His last game was the middle of November, so that’s a long time he’s had out through injury. He’s then got to come into the first-team space, challenge his teammates and show the ability and the personality which I know he has.”
From Kaduna to the Premier League
Fredrick’s journey is one of Nigerian football’s most inspiring recent stories. A product of Simoiben Football Academy in his hometown of Kaduna, founded by Super Eagles winger Moses Simon, he spent the 2021/22 season at ABS FC before joining Nasarawa United in the NPFL, where he featured at centre-back and right-back.
In August 2023, Brentford signed him on loan before making the deal permanent in April 2024. He thrived in the B team under Sam Saunders, helping the young Bees reach the Premier League Cup final and winning the Under-21 Professional Development League national title. In May 2025, he was named Brentford B Players’ Player of the Year.
Super Eagles Cornerstone
Fredrick made his senior Nigeria debut in the Unity Cup penalty shootout victory over Jamaica at Brentford’s own Gtech Community Stadium in May 2025, a poetic moment for the defender. He went on to start Nigeria’s final four World Cup qualifying group matches before featuring in the African playoff campaign, playing in the semifinal victory over Gabon before Nigeria’s heartbreaking penalty defeat to DR Congo in the final.
His loan at Belgian side FCV Dender produced 15 appearances before a knee injury ended his spell prematurely in November 2025, also ruling him out of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Fredrick’s Ambitions
The defender was honest about his goals for the season ahead. “It’s a great feeling. I’m happy and proud of myself, and my family are proud of me as well,” Fredrick said. “My aim is to make my debut with the first team, get Premier League minutes and give my best when I have the opportunity.”
B team coach Saunders added his own tribute: “He’s an amazing character, a really likeable lad, very coachable. He’s got outstanding attributes in his one-v-one defending and is getting better and better all the time.”
