Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed a return to South African side Chippa United ahead of the 2026/27 season. The move ends seven months away from competitive football following his mutual exit from the club in February.
Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome Stanley Nwabali back to the Chilli Boys,” the club wrote.
A follow up statement added that he returns to the Eastern Cape and the club is pleased to have him back. Nwabali first joined Chippa United from Katsina United in 2022 and made 66 league appearances during that opening spell, keeping 25 clean sheets along the way.
Nwabali requested his release from Chippa in February while on international duty and left by mutual consent with more than a year still running on his contract. He remained a free agent for months, previously stating he was not desperate for a move and would wait for the right offer.
The lack of regular football affected his sharpness and cost him his place in Nigeria’s senior squad. He had been linked with clubs including Kaizer Chiefs, Morocco’s Raja Club Athletic, Saudi Arabia’s Al Ettifaq and England’s Queens Park Rangers, but none of those moves materialised.
Nwabali became a household name during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where his penalty saves against South Africa in the semifinal helped Nigeria reach the final. He also played a role in Nigeria’s bronze medal finish at AFCON 2025, saving penalties from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush in a shootout against Egypt. His prolonged spell without a club had raised questions over his Super Eagles future under Eric Chelle.
Regular football at Chippa United gives Nwabali a genuine chance to rebuild his match sharpness and push for a recall to the Super Eagles squad.
With Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign starting in September, his performances in the South African Premiership over the coming months could determine whether he reclaims his place as Chelle’s first choice goalkeeper.
