Alex Iwobi could write his name into Nigerian football history when the Super Eagles take on Portugal in an international friendly on Wednesday.
The Fulham midfielder heads into the high-profile encounter on 99 appearances for Nigeria and needs just one more cap to join an exclusive group of players who have reached the 100-match milestone for the national team.
Should he feature against the Portuguese, Iwobi would become only the fourth Nigerian footballer to achieve the feat, following former captains Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama, as well as record appearance holder Ahmed Musa.
The match presents more than just a personal milestone for the former Arsenal star. It could also see him become the fastest player in the history of the Super Eagles to reach 100 international appearances.
Iwobi made his senior debut for Nigeria in October 2015 during a friendly match against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Reaching 100 caps against Portugal would mean accomplishing the landmark in just over ten years, eclipsing the record previously set by Ahmed Musa.
Musa reached his 100th appearance for Nigeria during a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against the Central African Republic in October 2021, more than eleven years after making his international debut.
Over the past decade, Iwobi has grown into one of the most consistent figures in the Super Eagles squad. Since switching international allegiance from England, the versatile midfielder has featured at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup.
His influence has remained significant through different coaching eras, with his creativity and experience making him one of the first names on the team sheet whenever available.
Nigeria’s friendly against Portugal is expected to provide a stern test for Eric Chelle’s side as preparations continue for upcoming competitive fixtures.
