Al-Hilal’s hopes of signing Paul Onuachu this summer may have suffered another setback after Trabzonspor’s incoming winger Aral Şimşir publicly expressed his excitement about playing alongside the Nigerian striker.
The Saudi Pro League club has been linked with a move for Onuachu following his outstanding debut campaign after completing a permanent transfer from Southampton.
The experienced forward enjoyed a prolific 2025/26 season, scoring 22 goals and registering two assists in 30 Turkish Süper Lig appearances. His goals powered Trabzonspor back into European competition while also earning him the league’s Golden Boot.
Despite speculation over a possible move to Saudi Arabia, recent developments suggest Trabzonspor are planning for the new season with Onuachu playing a central role in their attack.
Aral Şimşir eager to create chances for Onuachu
Trabzonspor are close to sealing the signing of Danish winger Aral Şimşir from FC Midtjylland in a deal reportedly worth an initial €13 million, with an additional €2 million tied to performance-related bonuses.
After arriving in Trabzon, the 24-year-old spoke about his preferred playing positions and his ambitions at the club, making it clear that helping Onuachu score goals is one of his priorities.
“I’m very happy. I worked very hard to get here,” the 24-year-old said in quotes revealed by 61saat.
“It wasn’t a very difficult choice for me; they’ve been following me for 5 years anyway.
“I prefer playing as number 10 or on the left wing. I thank everyone who came here; may God be pleased with them.”
“My first priority is to score goals and provide assists,” Şimşir continued.
“I want to do the same in the national team. I am used to playing as a number 10 and on the left wing. I enjoy playing in these positions.
“I will do my best. I will do everything I can to help Onuachu score a goal.”
His remarks are likely to excite Trabzonspor fans, who are eager to see the club build on last season’s success.
Şimşir’s versatility on the left flank and in attacking midfield is expected to add creativity to Trabzonspor’s frontline, providing more service for a striker who finished as the Turkish Süper Lig’s leading scorer last season.
The latest signing also reinforces the belief that Trabzonspor are focused on strengthening the squad around Onuachu rather than preparing to lose him.
