Fresh reports have cast doubt on claims that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has signed a lucrative new contract worth $100,000 per month with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), despite earlier comments suggesting an agreement had already been reached.
Last month, National Sports Commission (NSC) chairman Shehu Dikko stated that Chelle’s contract had been renewed after guiding Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Franco-Malian coach, who took charge of the Super Eagles in January 2025 on an initial two-year contract, was also reportedly handed additional responsibility for the Nigeria U-23 team. Reports further claimed that his monthly salary had doubled from $50,000 to $100,000, while members of his coaching crew were offered separate contracts.
“Éric Chelle has not extended his contract with Nigeria and reports to the contrary follow cursory comments by the NSC chairman,” the BBC Correspondent wrote.
“The NFF face competition from a host of African countries and North African clubs eager to sign the Franco-Malian coach.”
According to Okeleji, negotiations between the NFF and Chelle are still ongoing, with the coach’s current contract due to expire in January 2027.
The uncertainty comes at a time when Chelle’s stock has risen significantly across the continent. Reports indicate that Algeria and Ivory Coast are among the countries monitoring his situation after both nations fell short in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns.
