Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have officially ended after FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative for the inter-confederation playoff tournament.
The confirmation came when FIFA released the final list of six teams that will compete in the intercontinental playoffs, and the Democratic Republic of Congo was included while Nigeria was not.
Nigeria had been hoping to keep their qualification hopes alive through the playoff route, especially after the Nigeria Football Federation filed a protest against DR Congo, alleging that the Congolese side fielded ineligible players during a crucial qualifier.
However, FIFA ultimately upheld the original result and confirmed DR Congo’s place, effectively ending Nigeria’s campaign for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The inter-confederation playoff tournament will feature six nations competing for the final World Cup spots, with DR Congo representing Africa in that final qualification pathway.
Nigeria had been hoping to reach the expanded 48-team World Cup, but the confirmation of DR Congo’s place means the three-time African champions will miss the tournament entirely unless there is an unexpected reversal.
The focus for Nigeria will now shift to rebuilding the national team and preparing for future continental competitions and the next World Cup qualification cycle.
