During his time at TS Galaxy, Etafia worked closely with several goalkeepers and earned recognition as one of the respected goalkeeper trainers in the country’s top division. His work helped strengthen the club’s goalkeeping department and contributed to their growth in the PSL.

Young Africans identified that experience as they looked to strengthen their technical crew ahead of another campaign that will include domestic and continental commitments.

The Tanzanian champions recently appointed experienced South African coach Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach, and Etafia is among several new faces added to the backroom staff.

The move represents a significant milestone in his post-playing career and provides him with an opportunity to work at a club expected to challenge for major honours both domestically and on the continent.

From Super Eagles goalkeeper to respected coach

Before moving into coaching, Etafia enjoyed a lengthy playing career, particularly in South Africa, where he featured for clubs including Moroka Swallows and Highlands Park.

His performances earned him opportunities with Nigeria, making four appearances for the Super Eagles during his playing days. Although he never became a regular starter for the national team, he remained a respected figure among Nigerian goalkeepers of his generation.

Since retiring, he has focused on developing young goalkeepers and building a reputation as a specialist coach.

Big expectations at Young Africans

Young Africans are among the most ambitious clubs on the African continent.

The Dar es Salaam-based side have won numerous league titles and consistently target deep runs in CAF competitions. With experienced Mali international Djigui Diarra among their goalkeeping options, Etafia will immediately begin working with some of the top shot-stoppers in East African football.

For the former Super Eagles goalkeeper, the move offers another chance to showcase his coaching abilities on a bigger stage.

As Young Africans prepare for a new season filled with high expectations, Etafia will hope his experience and expertise can help the club maintain its dominance in Tanzania while pushing for greater success in continental football.
