Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is set to remain at the helm of Nigeria’s senior national team after reaching an agreement on improved contract terms with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The development was confirmed by Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, following a high-level meeting between officials of the NSC and the NFF in Abuja on Tuesday.
The agreement effectively puts an end to months of speculation surrounding Chelle’s future and signals the federation’s confidence in the Franco-Malian tactician ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and future international competitions.
Chelle Earns Improved Deal After AFCON Success
Chelle’s current two-year contract is scheduled to expire at the end of 2026. However, negotiations over an enhanced package have been ongoing since Nigeria’s impressive third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Reports had suggested that the Super Eagles boss requested a monthly salary of $130,000, a package that would also cover the wages of his backroom staff and other operational expenses.
While the final figures are yet to be officially announced by the NFF, sources indicate that Chelle’s salary will rise from $50,000 to approximately $100,000 per month under the new arrangement.
A significant aspect of the agreement is the federation’s decision to assume responsibility for paying Chelle’s assistants, easing the financial burden previously borne by the coach.
Speaking on the matter, Dikko confirmed that both parties had reached an understanding and that the formal paperwork would soon be completed.
“With this new contract and new remuneration I think the NFF will do the necessary and finalise it,” Dikko said. “But at least I can confirm to you we have agreed a new terms with the Coach pending when the NFF will put it on the paper. But at least we have agreed to settle with the coach about his new remuneration we are going to increase his money.
“We are also going to take care of his assistants that are helping him and I’m sure the coach would be excited about it that has been put out of the way so NFF will deal with the rest.“
Chelle Also Handed U-23 Eagles Responsibility
In addition to retaining his role with the Super Eagles, Chelle is expected to oversee Nigeria’s U-23 national team, the Olympic Eagles.
The move is part of a broader strategy aimed at creating a unified football philosophy across Nigeria’s national teams while ensuring a smoother transition for emerging talents into the senior squad.
The NFF believes Chelle’s involvement with the U-23 side will strengthen player development and improve coordination between the youth and senior national teams.
With a new contract now on the horizon and expanded responsibilities awaiting him, Chelle appears set to play a central role in shaping the future of Nigerian football as the country targets qualification for major international tournaments and long-term success on the continental stage.
