Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has praised the Flying Eagles following their commanding 3-0 victory over Togo at the ongoing WAFU B U20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Nigerian U20 side produced a strong second-half performance to overcome their West African rivals and strengthen their position in Group B. Chelle was among the spectators at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium in Yamoussoukro as he continued monitoring some of Nigeria’s brightest young talents.
The former Mali coach was particularly impressed by the way the Flying Eagles responded after a difficult opening 45 minutes.
Chelle praises tactical improvement
Nigeria found it difficult to impose themselves during the first half as Togo enjoyed spells of possession and created problems for the Flying Eagles.
However, the game changed significantly after the break.
Chelle revealed that the tactical adjustments made by the coaching crew played a major role in Nigeria’s improved performance. He noted that the team pressed higher up the pitch in the second half and consistently won possession in dangerous areas. That aggressive approach eventually led to the goals that secured a comfortable victory.
The Super Eagles boss admitted he was pleased with the energy, intensity and determination shown by the players after halftime.
According to him, the Flying Eagles created numerous opportunities because of their pressing game and deserved the result they achieved.
Why Chelle is following the Flying Eagles closely
Since taking charge of the Super Eagles, Chelle has repeatedly stressed the importance of building stronger links between Nigeria’s youth teams and the senior national side.
His presence at the match underlined that commitment.
The Franco-Malian tactician has made youth development a key part of his long-term vision for Nigerian football. He believes the country’s U17 and U20 teams represent the foundation upon which future Super Eagles success will be built.
By attending Flying Eagles matches and training sessions, Chelle hopes to identify promising players early and monitor their progress before they eventually move abroad.
The coach explained that tracking players becomes more challenging once they spread across different leagues and countries, making early identification particularly important.
Flying Eagles gaining momentum
The victory over Togo was an important response from the Flying Eagles as they continue their quest for WAFU B glory.
After a closely contested first half, Nigeria showed greater urgency and confidence after the interval, overwhelming their opponents with relentless pressure and attacking intent.
The result also highlighted the work being done by Flying Eagles coach Abdu Maikaba, whose tactical tweaks helped transform the contest in Nigeria’s favour. Chelle specifically acknowledged the impact of those changes while applauding the players for carrying out the instructions effectively.
Bigger picture for Nigerian football
Beyond the result itself, Chelle views the Flying Eagles as an important part of Nigeria’s football future.
Several current Super Eagles stars first emerged through the country’s youth national teams before progressing to senior level. The coach hopes the latest generation can follow a similar pathway.
His continued involvement with the Flying Eagles reflects a wider strategy aimed at creating a smoother transition between age-grade football and the senior national team.
With Nigeria’s youngsters showing encouraging signs at the WAFU B Championship, Chelle will undoubtedly continue watching closely.
And after what he described as an impressive second-half display against Togo, the Super Eagles boss appears convinced that several members of the current Flying Eagles squad have the potential to become important players for Nigeria in the years ahead.
