Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman delivered another reminder of his quality after scoring twice in Atletico Madrid’s convincing 4-1 victory over Getafe in a pre-season friendly.

The Nigerian forward was the standout performer as Diego Simeone’s men kicked off preparations for the new campaign with an impressive display. Lookman’s goals played a major role in the comfortable win and further strengthened his growing importance within the Atletico squad.

Having joined the Spanish giants earlier this year, the former Atalanta attacker has adapted quickly to life in Madrid. His performances during the second half of last season already established him as a fan favourite, and he appears determined to carry that momentum into the new campaign.

Lookman steals the show

Atletico started brightly and Lookman wasted little time making his mark on the contest.

The Nigerian forward opened the scoring with a clinical finish after reacting quickest to a rebound, giving Simeone’s side an early advantage. He then doubled his tally before halftime, finishing off an excellent attacking move to put Atletico firmly in control of proceedings.

His movement, positioning and finishing proved too much for Getafe’s defence to handle throughout the first half.

While pre-season matches are often used to build fitness and test tactical ideas, Lookman’s sharpness in front of goal immediately caught the eye. The forward looked fully prepared for the challenges of the upcoming season and demonstrated why Atletico invested heavily to bring him to the club.

Simeone sees encouraging signs

The friendly also gave Simeone an opportunity to assess several members of his squad.

Atletico experimented with different tactical setups and handed minutes to a mixture of established stars and promising youngsters. Despite the numerous changes, the team maintained its intensity and attacking threat throughout the game.

After Lookman’s first-half brace, Atletico continued to dominate following the break. Arnau Ortiz added another goal before Obed Vargas converted a late penalty to complete the scoring and seal a comfortable victory.

One of the biggest positives from the evening was the performance of his Nigerian attacker, who looked sharp, confident and hungry for goals.

Important season ahead

Lookman enters the new campaign carrying significant expectations.

The Super Eagles forward enjoyed an impressive debut period at Atletico after arriving from Atalanta and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most dangerous attacking players. His pace, creativity and eye for goal added a new dimension to Atletico’s attack during the second half of last season.

Now, with a full pre-season behind him, expectations are even higher.

Atletico will be aiming to challenge for major honours in Spain and Europe, and Lookman is expected to play a central role in those ambitions.

His ability to score important goals could prove crucial as the Madrid club battles rivals such as Real Madrid and Barcelona across multiple competitions.
