Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has issued a stern warning that failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup would amount to a “national crime” for the Current Super Eagles team. The ex-midfielder made the remarks during his ObiOne Podcast, emphasizing the urgency and responsibility that lies with the current crop of players.
With two qualifying fixtures remaining, Nigeria sits third in Group C, trailing leaders South Africa and Benin. Mikel says Nigeria’s campaign is “hanging by a thread,” but insists qualification is still within reach if the players show unity, focus, and grit.
“It’s going to be a crime, an absolute crime, if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again,” Mikel declared, stressing that the nation’s pride is on the line.
“The players have to win these two games — no excuses. Everything else goes out the window now.”
He also addressed off-field distractions affecting the Super Eagles, particularly issues within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Mikel acknowledged internal problems but said they should not derail the team’s focus.
“Yes, there are problems in the NFF; everyone knows that, but right now, that doesn’t matter. Win your two games first.”
He urged senior players, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Victor Boniface to step up and lead by example.
Despite Nigeria’s inconsistent campaign, which includes five draws in eight matches, Mikel remains optimistic. He believes that with mental strength and accountability, the team can still reach the World Cup.
The Super Eagles will next face Lesotho in Polokwane, followed by a home fixture against Benin Republic in Uyo. Wins in both matches are non-negotiable if Nigeria hopes to escape the group and secure a spot at the 2026 tournament.
