Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has spoken openly about his decision to represent Nigeria’s Super Eagles instead of England’s Three Lions.
Born and raised in London to Nigerian parents, the 29-year-old full-back was once seen as a strong candidate for the England senior team. He featured regularly for England’s youth sides from U16 up to U20 level and even earned a call-up to the U21 squad in 2015.
However, in March 2017, Aina accepted an invitation to train with the Super Eagles in London. That experience changed everything.
“That’s My Heritage”
In a recent interview with Nottingham Forest’s media team, Aina revealed the thinking behind his choice.
“Born and raised in London, I chose to play for Nigeria. It was simply a decision I made when I was around 20. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my heritage,” he said.
He added that the opportunity felt right at the time.
“The opportunity presented itself, and I believed it was the right one at that moment, so I embraced it wholeheartedly, and here I am today.”
Because he had not yet played a competitive match for England’s U21 team, the switch was approved by FIFA. Aina made his senior debut for Nigeria in October 2017 during a World Cup qualifier against Zambia.
Family Pride
One of the strongest factors for Aina was the joy his decision brought to his family.
“My family is extremely proud of me, particularly when I wear the Super Eagles shirt. They cherish it even more than I do. For me, it’s a privilege; it’s an honour. It’s truly remarkable to play for them,” Aina explained.

Since making the switch, Ola Aina has become a regular and reliable member of the Super Eagles squad. At club level, Aina has established himself in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest. Known for his athleticism, overlapping runs and solid defensive work, he remains an important player for the club as his contract runs until 2026.
