Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained his decision to substitute Samuel Chukwueze during Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener.
Chukwueze started the match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo but was replaced around the hour mark by Moses Usor, who was making his senior debut for Nigeria.
Usor went on to become one of the heroes of the comeback victory, scoring the winning goal just four minutes after coming off the bench.
Chelle made it clear after the match that Chukwueze was not taken off because of an injury. The decision was purely tactical, with the coach believing the AC Milan winger was beginning to tire.
“It was a tactical decision because, as you know, he finished the first half well. So I felt he was a little bit tired, and I wanted to bring some energy into the team,” Chelle explained.
The coach also introduced Moses Simon during the second half as Nigeria looked to increase their attacking threat.
Chelle praised the two substitutes for bringing greater intensity and attacking ability to the game, particularly in one-on-one situations.
The changes eventually paid off as Usor produced an impressive solo effort, beating defenders before finding the net to complete Nigeria’s comeback.
Madagascar had taken a surprise lead in the 16th minute through Ehsan Kari, but George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time with his first goal for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria then completed the turnaround through Usor to begin their AFCON qualifying campaign with three points.
Chukwueze’s appearance was also a landmark one, as the winger earned his 60th cap for Nigeria. The Super Eagles will next face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
